I didn't cause the arrest of Kwahu Queen Mother: Eastern Regional Minister asserts
The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has refuted claims that she sanctioned the arrest of the Kwahu Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyemtua III, describing the reports as false and misleading.
The clarification followed a publication by Agoo 96.9 FM, which shared a story and accompanying video in which a chief — identified as Nana Nilm Sarpong, Abene Bamuhene — alleged that the minister had confirmed authorising the arrest.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the minister dismissed the claim as a “misrepresentation of facts,” grounded in complete falsehood.
She explained that on December 1, 2025, a delegation of Kwahu chiefs visited the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council to brief her on developments following the queen mother’s arrest and to follow up on a referral from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
During the meeting, the chiefs informed her that the IGP had apologised for the incident, acknowledging that the arrest was carried out by police officers and that he had ordered an investigation into their conduct.
The minister added that she also rendered an apology to the chiefs — not because she directed the arrest, but because she serves as regional minister and head of the regional security council, and, therefore, felt obliged to express regret over the occurrence.
