A Warrant Officer Class II of the Ghana Armed Forces has been taken into custody in the Ashanti Region over allegations that he attempted to unlawfully trade military-grade weapons to a civilian.

The suspect, W.O. II David Kofi Brew, attached to the 4th Battalion in Kumasi, was arrested on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, around 2:30 p.m. at the Bekwai Shell Service Station. His arrest followed a covert, intelligence-driven operation carried out by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) under the leadership of ASP Princeton Peasah Darkwa.

Police sources indicate that the operation was part of a broader security strategy aimed at breaking up arms supply routes fueling criminal activities in Obuasi and nearby areas. Intelligence gathered earlier had linked the soldier to the illegal circulation of firearms.

Following the tip-off, undercover officers initiated contact with the suspect on December 15, 2025. During the engagement, he reportedly arrived in a military vehicle bearing registration number 54 GA 92 and claimed he could provide various weapons, including M16 and G3 rifles, pistols, and other firearms. An undercover operative expressed interest in acquiring an M16 rifle, which the suspect allegedly priced at GH¢80,000.

The following day, the suspect allegedly informed the operative that the firearm was ready, along with an extra pistol. He arranged to meet at the Bekwai Shell Station, where police moved in and arrested him as he attempted to complete the transaction.

Weapons seized during the arrest reportedly included a TMM .22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three magazines.

Investigators say the suspect has admitted during questioning to previously supplying firearms to individuals within Obuasi and its environs. He remains in police custody assisting with investigations, while the Ghana Armed Forces command is expected to be officially informed as the case progresses.
