A/R: KMA impounds, fines 22 commercial vehicles over unapproved fares

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Ashanti region, has impounded 22 commercial vehicles for charging unapproved transport fares.
The assembly imposed fines ranging from GHS500 to GHS1,000 on these vehicles, too, apart from threatening to prosecute repeat offenders.
The enforcement action was conducted by the KMA's Taskforce in the Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
It aimed to ensure compliance with the 15 per cent fare reduction agreed upon between the transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.
The KMA had previously warned commercial drivers to adhere to the newly announced fare rates following numerous complaints and public outcry.
However, some drivers ignored the warning and continued to charge unapproved fares, even exceeding the previous rates during evening hours.
Mr Randy Wilson, Head of Transport Department at the KMA, told Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah the enforcement exercise would continue, and anyone found in violation again would face the consequences.
He urged passengers to only board vehicles from approved transport stations and to look for vehicles displaying KMA stickers.
Additionally, Mr Wilson warned drivers to refrain from loading passengers in unauthorised areas to avoid arrest.
The KMA has established a fine of up to GHS1,000 for vehicles that are found loading in unauthorised areas within the CBD.
