Stella Aba Seal urges young gospel artists to create original songs for next generation
During an interview on Accra-based No.1 FM’s Journey to Heaven, veteran gospel artist Stella Aba Seal reflected on the evolution of gospel music since her early days in the ministry and urged young artists to focus on creating original songs.
When asked how she sees gospel music today, Stella Aba Seal explained that it has evolved into two main approaches.
“There are artists like Piesie Esther, Joe Mettle, Diana Hamilton, and many others who are creating new songs.
Then there are others who mostly perform existing songs,” she said.
“Both groups are praising God, but I often encourage those singing existing songs to also create their own because it is important to leave a legacy for the next generation.”
She emphasised the importance of originality, saying, “If you sing someone else’s song and gain fame, you should also create your own.
The Bible says, ‘Sing a new song unto the Lord,’ so that future generations can have songs to sing.”
Addressing a common misconception, Stella Aba Seal clarified that some of her songs are often mistaken for existing songs by younger listeners.
“I remember recording a song while pregnant with my second child, who is now 31.
Young people think it’s an old song, but it’s actually mine.
Even if a listener wasn’t born when it was first released, the song is there for the body of Christ to worship with,” she explained, sharing a verse from the song during the interview.
Reflecting on the past, she acknowledged the contributions of earlier gospel musicians, including Professor Kofi Abraham. “Back then, people did an incredible job, and we built upon that foundation.
By the grace of God, we continue that work, and I’m pleading with young artists to create new songs for the future of gospel music,” she concluded.
