Finance Minister urges Ghanaians to protect and promote cedi as a symbol of economic independence
The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on Ghanaians to show renewed commitment to protecting and promoting the national currency, the Ghana Cedi, describing it as a vital emblem of the country’s economic independence and national identity.
Speaking during the Cedi@60 Anniversary Celebration, Dr. Forson urged citizens to trade, defend, and speak positively about the Cedi, emphasising that collective confidence in the national currency is key to building a resilient and self-reliant economy.
“The Cedi is the only currency we have.
Let us protect it.
Let us trade with it.
Let us defend it,” he said.
“Let us talk about it with pride, not as a burden, but as a badge of economic independence.”
The Finance Minister noted that as Ghana celebrates six decades of the Cedi, it is time for all citizens to reflect on its journey and significance in shaping national economic development.
“As we celebrate sixty years of the Cedi, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the call to help build the Ghana we want,” he added.
Dr. Forson underscored that the strength and stability of the Cedi depend not only on sound fiscal and monetary policies but also on the collective belief and actions of Ghanaians who use it every day.
The Cedi@60 celebration, themed “A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience,” marks six decades since the introduction of Ghana’s national currency in 1965, replacing the British pound.
The event highlights the Cedi’s evolution, its role in promoting financial independence, and ongoing efforts to strengthen its value amid global economic challenges.
