Former Defence Minister and Bimbila MP Dominic Nitiwul has cautioned newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga to prioritise cooperation within the Majority leadership if he is to succeed in his new role.

According to Mr Nitiwul, Mr Agalga could face significant difficulties in managing government business in Parliament if he fails to secure the backing of the Majority’s front bench.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, August 8, he stressed the need for the new Majority Leader to build strong working relationships with the Speaker, his deputies, other Majority leaders and the Minority.

Mr Nitiwul said Mr Agalga must demonstrate that he is capable of handling the demands of the position and earning the confidence of his colleagues.

Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured Mr Agalga of his full support, describing him as his new leader.

He said the Majority’s leadership structures had already been established and expressed confidence in Mr Agalga’s ability to lead government business effectively.

Mr Dafeamekpor also praised the new Majority Leader as an articulate lawyer with considerable experience in leadership.

Mr Agalga, for his part, has acknowledged the demanding nature of the assignment but expressed confidence in his ability to deliver.

In an exclusive interview with TV3, he said his experience in Parliament had prepared him for the responsibility and pledged not to disappoint Ghanaians.

Mr Agalga pointed to his eight-year tenure as Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, during which he scrutinised the work of former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, as part of his parliamentary experience.

His appointment follows the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Sources close to the process told 3News that Mr Agalga, who chairs the Defence and Interior Committee, had been informed by NDC General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey and the outgoing Majority Leader that he would take over as the new leader of government business in Parliament.

President John Mahama has also nominated Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.

The nominations were announced in a statement issued on Friday, August 7, by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
