Condom sales surge ahead of celebration of last Valentine’s Day – Report
A recent vox pop conducted by Accra 100.5 FM ahead of Valentine’s Day has revealed a noticeable rise in condom purchases across the country, with many respondents admitting they had stocked up in anticipation of the romantic season.
Several participants said they bought more condoms than usual, citing the need to prioritise safety while celebrating the occasion.
For many, Valentine’s Day is associated with increased intimacy, and they stressed the importance of being prepared and responsible.
Vendors at local pharmacies and open markets confirmed the upward trend, noting that condom sales typically spike in the days leading up to February 14.
Some sellers described the surge as an annual pattern, with customers purchasing in larger quantities than on regular days.
Health experts have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive sign of growing awareness around sexual and reproductive health.
They emphasised that consistent condom use plays a critical role in preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and reducing the risk of unintended pregnancies.
While the trend has been praised, experts and social commentators alike are urging that safe sex practices should extend beyond festive occasions.
On social media, many users are calling for stronger public education on the correct and consistent use of condoms, stressing that responsibility and protection should remain central to intimate relationships at all times.
The discussions have reignited broader conversations about sexual health awareness, particularly among young people, with advocates encouraging continuous education and open dialogue on the subject.
