Court orders NPP’s Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining to open defence in galamsey case
The Accra High Court has ordered Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, to open their defence in a case involving alleged illegal mining activities at the Samreboi concession.
The decision followed the court’s dismissal of a submission of no case to answer filed by the accused.
Presiding judge, Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, ruled that witnesses presented by the prosecution had established a case that requires the accused persons to respond.
Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited have each pleaded not guilty to charges of assignment of mineral rights without approval and purposely facilitating an unlicensed mining operation.
