Interior Minister responds to Minority Leader’s apology over recruitment claims

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has acknowledged the apology of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin following allegations of impropriety in the ongoing security services recruitment exercise.

Mr Afenyo-Markin had previously raised concerns about the involvement of a private IT company in the recruitment process, claiming it was fraudulent and imposed excessive costs on applicants.

The Interior Minister challenged these claims as baseless, prompting the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, to refer the Minority Leader to Parliament’s Privileges Committee on grounds of contempt.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the Minority Leader formally withdrew his remarks on the floor of Parliament and expressed regret, clarifying that he had no intention of damaging the Interior Minister’s image and that future concerns would be raised through appropriate channels.

In response, Mr Muntaka described the initial allegations as deeply troubling, emphasising that accusations of serious misconduct can cause significant personal and professional harm.

While noting the impact the matter had on him, he said he accepted the apology in good faith and appealed for the remarks to be removed from the official parliamentary record.

The development brings a temporary closure to a dispute that had threatened to escalate into a full parliamentary inquiry.
