Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has mounted a strong defence of his integrity and record in public office amid allegations of extortion levelled against him by Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, August 24, Mr Afenyo-Markin said his conduct in office had been guided by hard work, determination and a clear conscience.

“I can modestly and humbly say that I have served in this position with integrity. I came into this office a man of hard work, with determination, and I have achieved for myself what I have to do for myself, my family and my constituents. I work with [a] clear conscience and with fidelity to the responsibilities entrusted to me. I say so without more,” he said.

His comments came as he responded to allegations that he had engaged in extortion, which he said had crossed the acceptable boundaries of political discourse.

“There is a limit to political discourse. There are lines that must not be crossed. And these red lines, once crossed, they must be dealt with,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had chosen to subject the matter to the legal process by filing cases against Mr Gyamfi and CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Eric Adjei over the allegations.

He said writs had been filed in suit number GT1029/2026, entitled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin vs Samuel Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Ltd at the Accra High Court, and suit number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, entitled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin vs Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court.

“In the face of the allegations of extortion leveled against me, I have chosen to take [a] high moral ground by submitting myself to the processes of the law,” he explained.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time, the court will make the appropriate determination on these matters.”

The Minority Leader also challenged Mr Gyamfi to formally report the extortion allegation to the relevant authorities. 

“I also await with bated breath that the man who made the allegation, will have the courage to report the matter to the police or the OSP or any investigating agency in this country,” he said.

He added he was prepared to cooperate fully with any investigation.

“And I expect that if they muster the courage to report that I have extorted from them and I am invited, I shall submit myself to every investigation so that eventually my name is cleared,” he said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) said earlier on Monday that it had taken note of the extortion allegations made by Mr Gyamfi and acknowledged three petitions submitted in relation to them. The OSP said it would assess whether the matter falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.
