Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea reflects on symbolic Ghana chocolate moment with Mahama and Korean president
Ghana's Ambassador to South Korea Kojo Choi has described a recent diplomatic moment involving Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung as a "truly moving moment" that stands out in his life.
In a Facebook post, the Ghanaian envoy recounted posing for a photograph with President Mahama while holding a “giant Ghana chocolate” specially prepared by President Lee. The chocolate, he noted, had President Mahama’s name written on it.
According to the ambassador, the gesture carried deep symbolic meaning, highlighting that Ghanaian chocolate is a widely recognised product in South Korea and has been familiar to many Koreans since childhood.
He said the moment was particularly emotional because the popular chocolate brand shares the same name as Ghana, the country he has represented throughout his life.
Standing alongside the leaders of both nations while holding the chocolate, he said, highlighted the growing friendship between Ghana and South Korea.
The ambassador added that President Mahama, during discussions with President Lee, expressed hope that relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen, becoming “deeper and warmer” just like the sweetness associated with chocolate.
He also expressed optimism that more Koreans would come to see Ghana beyond the chocolate brand, recognising it as a country of opportunity, culture and aspirations.
The envoy concluded by describing Ghana and South Korea as close partners whose friendship continues to grow stronger through diplomatic engagement and cultural connections.
