Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has marked Ghana Independence Day with a message emphasising the enduring importance of ideas, strong institutions and vigilance in safeguarding freedom.

In a post shared on Facebook following the national celebration at Jubilee House, Akufo-Addo reflected on the deeper meaning of Ghana’s independence and its significance for both present and future generations.

“Our independence, for us and for future generations, represents the abiding truth that ideas matter; that philosophy shapes politics; that institutions outlive individuals; and that, as it is said, eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty,” he wrote.

The former president concluded his message by extending anniversary greetings to citizens, saying: “Happy Anniversary, Fellow Ghanaians.”

Akufo-Addo was among several dignitaries who attended the 69th Independence Day ceremony at Jubilee House, the seat of government in Accra, where he was seated alongside fellow former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Images accompanying his post showed the former president exchanging greetings with President John Dramani Mahama and meeting and Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis Terrance Michael Drew, who was in Ghana for the national celebrations.
