Sports journalist Gary Al-Smith has issued an unreserved apology following criticism over a controversial phrase he used while sharing Valentine’s-themed advice to young men.

In a Facebook post, Al-Smith explained that he had intended to deliver what he described as an inspirational message aimed at encouraging young men who may feel under pressure in their relationships. His broader point, according to the context he provided, was to urge men to focus on personal development — building themselves, improving their social capital and strengthening their financial standing — so they would grow in confidence rather than feel inferior when approaching women.

However, he acknowledged that the wording he chose undermined that message.

Using the expression “women age like milk, men age like wine,” he said he initially saw nothing wrong with the phrase, noting that he had used it for years in similar contexts. But after posting it online, he said many people pointed out that the wording was outdated and offensive.

“But once my post landed on the social media compound house, many of you made sure that I appreciated how obsolete that phrasing was/is in today’s world, and it marred the beauty of the message I intended to send,” he wrote.

Al-Smith said the criticism prompted reflection and further reading.

“It has taken a fitful night's sleep, educational reading material from biology to social anthropology (thank you to those who sent them), and subsequent reflection to update myself on many things. My conclusion is that, yes, that phrasing is problematic,” he revealed.

The renowned media personality then offered a direct apology.

“I did not speak well. I am sorry. No ifs. No buts. I am sorry for hurting the many people who believed that phrasing was/is/should be beneath me. You are right,” he said.

On reparatory “next steps,” Al-Smith noted the following:

- I am deleting the post altogether.

- As I always do, I will continue to be careful how I use my influence and the privilege of my position.

He concluded by wishing his followers a Happy Valentine's weekend.
