Volleyball gold seals Ghana’s 10th medal finish at ANOCA Zone III Games
Team Ghana wrapped up their participation in the 2nd Edition of the ANOCA Zone III Games with a total of 10 medals, highlighted by a stunning gold medal victory from the Men’s Volleyball Team.
The 44-member Ghanaian contingent competed in Taekwondo, Karate-Do, Volleyball (Men), and Handball (Men & Women), delivering strong performances across all disciplines.
In Taekwondo, Ghana claimed three bronze medals in the -58kg, -68kg, and +80kg categories.
The Karate-Do team added to the tally with four medals — two silver (Kata Seniors and Kumite 67kg) and two bronze (Kumite 75kg and Kumite 60kg).
The Men’s Volleyball Team stole the show, going unbeaten throughout the tournament.
They defeated Niger (3–1), Burkina Faso (3–0), Togo (3–0), and Benin (3–1) to emerge as Zone III Champions, bringing home Ghana’s only gold medal.
Both Handball Teams also impressed, fighting their way to the finals.
However, the Men’s Team fell to Benin, while the Women’s Team lost to Burkina Faso, earning two silver medals for Ghana.
A colourful medal ceremony was held to honour all medal-winning athletes, where the Volleyball Team received a mini trophy for their outstanding display.
Speaking after the ceremony, Abdulai Haruna Alhassan, Acting Head of Mission at the Ghana Embassy in Ouagadougou, commended the athletes for their dedication and discipline.
“Just being here to compete makes you a winner.
I’m proud you’re returning home with medals.
This tournament has given you valuable exposure, and our doors are always open to welcome you to Burkina Faso.
Thank you for respecting the game, the organisers, and the host country,” said Mr. Alhassan.
Officials, including Chef de Mission Nii Lante Bannerman and Team Manager Nana Adu Mankatta, also joined in celebrating the athletes for flying Ghana’s flag high throughout the competition.
