E/R: MP breaks ground for first-ever astroturf project in Lower West Akim

The town of Asamankese came alive on a warm and spirited morning as Owen Kwame Frimpong, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, led a symbolic sod-cutting ceremony to commence the construction of a state-of-the-art AstroTurf pitch — the first of its kind in the constituency.
The well-attended event drew youth groups, traditional leaders, teachers, and sports enthusiasts who gathered in anticipation of what many hailed as a major milestone in the constituency’s development journey.
Mr Frimpong, who broke a 24-year political stronghold by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with his December 2024 victory, reiterated his commitment to transforming Lower West Akim through strategic investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and sports.
“Today is just the beginning. In three to four months, Lower West Akim will have its first AstroTurf pitch,” he announced. “And this won’t be the only one — I plan to deliver two or three more before the end of my term.”
Designed to meet FIFA standards, the AstroTurf will provide a durable, year-round playing surface for organised football activities, school sports programmes, and community tournaments.
The MP emphasised that the facility would serve as a training ground for local youth teams and foster social cohesion through regular games and events.
The event was graced by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Paulina Akambila, and the Chief of the area, Osaberima Adu Darko III, who lauded the initiative as a long-overdue intervention for the community.
Osaberima Adu Darko III, addressing the gathering, commended the MP’s proactive leadership but urged him to fulfil his promise.
“As you promised us a world-class AstroTurf, honour it. My people have endured this dusty, uneven field for far too long,” he said.
Long before entering Parliament, Frimpong was already known for his dedication to grassroots development, from renovating clinics and schools to organising youth football tournaments and fixing local roads.
With construction expected to be completed within six months, the new AstroTurf represents a bold step toward nurturing sporting talent and creating new opportunities for the youth of Lower West Akim.
