NPP 2028 race: Over 200 former MMDCEs meet Bawumia in Accra

More than 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are meeting today with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, as the contest to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections begins to intensify.
The high-level engagement is seen as a strategic move by Dr. Bawumia to consolidate grassroots and administrative support from a key bloc of the party's former local government appointees, many of whom played crucial roles during the NPP’s two terms in government.
The meeting comes just days after Dr. Bawumia—who led the party into the 2024 elections as flagbearer—hosted a group of New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they pledged their backing for his anticipated re-election bid.
Political observers see the back-to-back engagements as early signs that the former Vice President is positioning himself for a strong comeback in the party’s internal presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 polls.
While Dr. Bawumia has yet to formally announce his candidacy, today’s meeting with the former MMDCEs adds to mounting speculation that he will seek a second opportunity to lead the party.
Party insiders describe the meeting as a show of force and unity, with discussions expected to focus on party reorganisation, lessons from the 2024 elections, and strategies for reclaiming power in 2028.
