Ghana expresses deep concern over post-election violence in Tanzania
The Government of Ghana has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating political and human rights situation in Tanzania following the country’s general elections held on October 29, 2025.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, December 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ghana is closely monitoring the post-election unrest, which has been marked by fatalities, violent clashes, and confrontations between security forces and protesters.
The Ministry warned that the escalating tensions pose serious risks to Tanzania’s long-term stability.
Ghana extended heartfelt condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the violence and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The statement acknowledged assurances by Tanzanian authorities to address impunity through accountability, justice, and adherence to constitutional order.
It underscored the importance of effective policing that respects human rights, stressing that the protection of protesters and the pursuit of justice must remain central to state responses.
Ghana urged all stakeholders—including government officials, political parties, civil society, protesters, and security agencies—to uphold the rule of law, respect democratic principles, and safeguard civic space.
These, it said, are crucial to preventing further violations and abuses.
As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Ghana aligned itself with calls by the African Union, the Commonwealth, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for all actors to exercise maximum restraint and support transparent, credible, and impartial investigations into the post-election violence. Such a process, Ghana emphasised, should guarantee due process for victims, detainees, and alleged perpetrators in accordance with international human rights standards.
The statement concluded with a call on the international community to extend all necessary support to Tanzania during this critical period.
