Bawumia will lose to NDC in 2028 — Pressure mounts within NPP for fresh leadership

A new tracking poll by Global InfoAnalytics has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political scene, revealing that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could lose to any National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the 2028 presidential elections.
According to the survey, even NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia — not previously considered a presidential contender — would edge out Dr. Bawumia in a head-to-head contest, with 50% of respondents supporting him and 45% backing the former Vice President.
The remaining 5% said they would prefer another candidate.
The findings, while early though, raise major questions about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects heading into 2028 and the sustainability of its current leadership.
Analysts say the poll underscores growing voter fatigue and dissatisfaction with continuity after the party’s 2024 loss.
Party insiders acknowledge that the results reflect deep-seated concerns about how the NPP reconnects with its grassroots and rebuilds public trust.
Many believe the party’s next chapter must focus on renewal, discipline, and a new message that resonates beyond its traditional base.
Supporters of Dr. Bawumia, however, have dismissed the poll’s implications, arguing that it’s premature and that political dynamics could shift before 2028.
Yet, the data points to a broader reality — the NPP’s next battle will not only be against the NDC, but also against voter apathy and the growing call for a different kind of leadership.
