V/R: Ho Rotary Club hands over refurbished, fully equipped maternity block at Kpando Health Centre
In a significant step in enhacing quality health care delivery, the Rotary Club of Ho has commissioned and handed over a refurbished and fully equipped maternity block at the Kpando Health Centre in the Volta Region.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Deputy Director of Clinical Services, Dr Alphonse Makafui Dzakpasu, described the project as a major intervention aimed at enhancing access to quality maternal and neonatal care in the region.
He noted that the facility would help sustain maternal mortality rates below the national average.
Dr Dzakpasu indicated that the upgraded maternity block is expected to significantly increase supervised deliveries at the health centre. According to him, the number of deliveries could rise from the current average of 15–25 cases to between 40 and 50, thereby improving service delivery outcomes.
He further stated that the project would strengthen emergency obstetric and neonatal care services, ultimately contributing to the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality across the catchment area. He also commended the Rotary Club of Ho for its continued support to health institutions in the region, including the Ho Teaching Hospital, and urged healthcare professionals to maintain high standards of professionalism, patient safety, and compassionate care.

The President of the Rotary Club of Ho, Maxwell Affram, expressed appreciation to partners and stakeholders who contributed to the successful execution of the project. He reaffirmed the club’s commitment to community development and called on the health centre management and residents to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance.
The Paramount Chief of Kpando, Okpekpewuokpe Akpinifia Togbe Dagadu IX, described the commissioning as a moment of fulfillment and renewed commitment to community well-being. He noted that the project, which originated from concerns about the poor state of the facility, has become a reality through collective effort and would bring renewed hope and dignity to mothers and newborns in the area. He urged health professionals to uphold high standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

The refurbishment involved the renovation and upgrading of the maternity unit to address longstanding infrastructural deficits, inadequate equipment, and gaps in emergency care and referral systems.
The development is expected to enhance service delivery and support the facility’s transition into a fully functional polyclinic with expanded capacity to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.
The commissioning ceremony brought together health officials, government representatives, traditional authorities, and members of the local community, all of whom lauded the initiative as timely and impactful.
