The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two cases of Mpox in the Accra Metropolitan Area, prompting swift action by health authorities to contain the spread of the virus and reassure the public.

In an official statement released Wednesday, the GHS announced that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health to implement all necessary public health interventions.

These measures include immediate contact tracing, intensified surveillance, and heightened public awareness to manage the situation effectively.

Mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials, typically presents symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, muscle and back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

Despite the confirmation of the cases, the Ministry of Health and the GHS emphasised that there is no cause for alarm.

“Ghana’s public health system remains vigilant,” the statement read, adding that established protocols for the detection, management, and control of infectious diseases are being rigorously applied.

Health officials have begun tracing and monitoring individuals who may have had contact with the confirmed cases.

These contacts are being observed for symptoms and are receiving the necessary medical guidance and support.

In addition, surveillance in health facilities and communities is being intensified to quickly identify and investigate any further suspected cases.

The Ministry and the GHS have also launched an extensive public education campaign on Mpox.

Citizens are being urged to practice proper hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility immediately.

“The Government of Ghana is committed to protecting the health and well-being of all citizens and residents,” said Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.

“We have the capacity and expertise to manage this situation and prevent a larger outbreak.”

The authorities reaffirm their preparedness and call on the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as containment efforts continue.
