African governors meet World Bank Group to launch Africa Medical Access & Manufacturing Initiative
A landmark moment is unfolding as African Governors meet with World Bank Group President Ajay Banga to unveil the Africa Medical Access & Manufacturing Initiative — a transformative, continent-wide programme aimed at strengthening healthcare sovereignty across Africa.
The initiative seeks to boost local production and equitable access to essential medicines and vaccines, marking a major step toward reducing Africa’s dependence on imported medical supplies.
Ghana's Minister of Finance, Dr Casiel Ato Forson, in a post on Facebook on Wednesday, October 15, described the new framework as a bold and coordinated effort to build resilient health systems, enhance regional pharmaceutical manufacturing, and ensure sustainable access to life-saving medical products.
The programme, he said, aligns with the African Union’s vision of a healthier, more self-reliant Africa, and reflects the World Bank Group’s growing commitment to supporting African-led development solutions through innovation, financing, and strategic partnerships.
The launch has been hailed as a historic milestone that will not only transform Africa’s healthcare landscape but also create jobs, attract investment, and improve public health outcomes across the continent.
