The Tetretem Royal Family of Duayaw-Nkwanta has accused the Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pious Opoku, of unlawfully issuing permits to galamsey operators without authorisation from the relevant state institutions.

The family says the MCE’s actions have opened the floodgates for illegal mining on sacred stool lands and forest reserves.

Speaking to journalists, Nana Asamaa Kofi Ofori Adu, representing the family, expressed disappointment in the MCE’s conduct.

“The MCE and some sub-chiefs have allowed CAKROB Limited to operate illegally, resulting in widespread destruction of lands and water bodies,” he said.

The family noted that the illegal mining has extended to areas reserved for future generations, including Adrobea, Bisi, Adagyamem and Aparapi. “These places are now being destroyed by foreigners who have been permitted to operate without proper authorisation,” the statement lamented.

According to the royal family, such activities never occurred during the reign of Nana Blakey Tromo III, the former president of the Duayaw-Nkwanta Traditional Council.

“This development is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately,” they stressed.

The family has called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Regional Security Council to intervene before tensions escalate.

“The situation is breeding resentment and could trigger unrest if urgent steps are not taken,” the statement concluded.
