National Security storms Gomoa Fetteh to halt sand wining activities
The government has been alerted to the alarming state of the sea defence at Gomoa Fetteh, where illegal sand winning activities have weakened the structure, putting nearby communities at risk of flooding.
Patrick Winibood Ndego, Head of the Eagle Eye Sight Clinic, brought this issue to the attention of the Special Director of Operations and National Security, Mr. Richard Jakpa, and the Central Regional Minister.
According to Mr Ndego's investigation, Charles Graham and Anthony Annan, popularly known as Nii Borkorkor, are allegedly responsible for the vandalism of the sea defence.
He expressed disappointment that the police in the region had failed to take action against these individuals and other land guards involved in the misconduct.
Mr. Ndego emphasised the need for urgent efforts to restore the sea defence at Gomoa Fetteh, citing the potential threat to human life and the risk of flooding in surrounding communities.
He also called on the Central Regional Minister to engage with Alhassan Amidu, whom he accused of seizing people's lands and machinery, as well as blocking roads unlawfully.
The Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, has condemned the ongoing sand mining activities, warning that if left unchecked, the sea could overwhelm the community.
He announced that arrangements have been made to implement measures to address the situation, including prosecution and imprisonment for those caught engaging in illegal sand digging.
The illegal sand digging has been ongoing for over six years, with the affected area facing severe erosion.
The government has pledged to take decisive action to protect the sea defence and prevent further damage
