Mahama condemns GNFS assault on Class FM's journalist
President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the assault on a journalist from Class FM by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to press freedom.
The attack occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region while the journalist, Samuel Addo, Class Media Group's Central Regional correspondent, was covering the aftermath of a fire outbreak.
Video footage of the assault — which has circulated widely on social media — showed GNFS officers reportedly using force against the reporter.
In a statement, President Mahama, during his tour of state media organisations, confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and interdicted pending investigations, and urged firm action against those found culpable.
Government officials, including the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, have also publicly condemned the attack, saying strong measures will be taken against anyone found responsible for undermining the safety and dignity of journalists.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has joined calls for accountability, denouncing the assault as a violation of media freedom and urging thorough investigations and appropriate sanctions.
