Tenants at Kasoa within the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region have expressed anger over what they describe as unfair and unjustified rent increases by landlords, despite signs of improving economic stability in the country.

The tenants argue that although Ghana’s economy is showing positive growth indicators, including declining inflation and stronger projections, rent charges in the area continue to rise sharply, placing additional financial pressure on households.

According to the tenants, many landlords have increased rents without undertaking any renovations or adding new facilities to their properties.

“The economy is improving, so we expect landlords to stabilise or even reduce rents, not increase them without any justification,” one tenant complained.

Responding to the concerns, the Kasoa Rent Control Manager, Mr. Ebenezer Ewusi Wilson, explained that rent levels are not determined solely by the general economic climate.

He noted that factors such as property renovations, additional attachments, or improved amenities could legitimately justify rent adjustments.

However, Mr Wilson stressed that landlords are not permitted to unilaterally increase rent without approval from the Rent Control Department.

He warned that arbitrary rent increments are illegal and punishable under the law, adding that landlords who flout the regulations risk facing fines, imprisonment, or both.

Mr Wilson urged tenants to report unfair rent hikes to the Rent Control Department for assessment and resolution, assuring the public that the department remains committed to protecting tenants’ rights.
