The Acting Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has taken steps to strengthen Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

In a formal request to the Office of the Attorney General, the Minister has called for the immediate revocation of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and its amendment, L.I. 2501.

The move, he said, is aimed at eliminating conflicting regulations and consolidating oversight under a unified legal framework to enhance enforcement.

According to Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) already has a robust regime capable of regulating all mining operations in Ghana.

He stressed that the EPA’s guidelines provide adequate safeguards to ensure compliance with environmental and social standards while promoting responsible mining practices.

The Minister noted that galamsey continues to devastate rivers, farmlands, and forest reserves across the country.

He described the new legal approach as a crucial step toward reversing environmental damage and protecting natural resources for future generations.

He further urged miners, traditional leaders, and local communities to support the government’s initiative, emphasising that collective action is essential in ending galamsey and restoring degraded ecosystems.
