GFL calls for reassignment of Special Prosecutor over loyalty concerns

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the government to reassign the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, raising concerns over potential loyalty issues due to his appointment under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Mr. Koomson expressed fears that Mr. Agyebeng may not be entirely impartial when handling corruption-related investigations involving former government officials.
“Even though Kissi Agyebeng is independent-minded, his trust and loyalty must be assessed,” Mr. Koomson stated.
He specifically cited the handling of investigations into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, suggesting that the Special Prosecutor may be taking symbolic action while shielding key individuals from genuine accountability.
While clarifying that he holds no personal grievances against the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Koomson insisted that public confidence in the Office of Recovery of Assets and Loot (ORAL) initiative — launched by President John Dramani Mahama — requires a new approach.
“The ORAL initiative is the President’s flagship anti-corruption programme, and it must yield results.
I believe the government should consider pursuing ORAL cases without involving the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he said.
As part of his recommendations, Mr. Koomson proposed the creation of special courts, modelled after the Fast Track Courts established during former President John Kufuor’s administration, to handle ORAL-related prosecutions.
He warned that relying exclusively on the conventional court system could cause unnecessary delays and blunt the impact of the President’s renewed fight against corruption.
“Time is of the essence. If we want to see real progress, we need efficient systems that deliver swift justice,” he stressed.
