The Ningo-Prampram District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has distributed livelihood empowerment items to 46 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote economic inclusion and sustainable livelihoods within the district.

The presentation ceremony, held on January 15, 2026, at the District Assembly Conference Hall, benefited 22 males and 24 females who received items requested through the Social Welfare and Community Development Department.

Items distributed included 19 chest freezers, two refrigerators, an electric sewing machine, plastic chairs, poly tanks, a shoe-making machine, a laptop, as well as cash support, all aimed at enhancing income-generating activities among beneficiaries.

The initiative was funded through three per cent of the District Assembly Common Fund allocated to support PWDs, underscoring the government’s commitment to the Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Addressing beneficiaries, the District Chief Executive, Mr Raphael Uriel Nartey, announced an increase in the Disability Fund and urged recipients to use the items judiciously to improve their livelihoods.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the concerns of PWDs and advised that grievances be channelled through recognised union leaders in line with established procedures.

The Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Richmond Tetteh, encouraged all PWDs in the district who are yet to register with the department to do so, with the aim of achieving full coverage.

He added that officers would be deployed to monitor and evaluate the use of the items to ensure they serve their intended purpose.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Joshua Addy, a representative of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and member of the Disability Fund Management Committee, cautioned beneficiaries against selling or diverting the items.

He announced that an impact assessment would be conducted within a year and urged PWDs to contribute to increasing the sector’s contribution to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product, currently estimated at seven per cent.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Ms. Rebecca Zotorvi expressed appreciation to the District Assembly and the government for the support.

She highlighted the economic challenges faced by PWDs and noted that the intervention would significantly improve their livelihoods and enhance their participation in national development.
