CJ breaks silence on suspension today

Her Ladyship, the suspended Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, is set to address the nation today at 3:00 p.m.
in a live broadcast expected to draw national attention to her suspension.
The address comes in the wake of her recent suspension from office and the commencement of official hearings into multiple petitions seeking her removal.
The statement will be delivered during a special press briefing at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Accra, with live coverage on major media networks.
According to The Law Platform, Justice Torkornoo is expected to speak on the events leading to her suspension, provide clarity on ongoing investigations, and respond to growing public concerns.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama, acting on the advice of the Judicial Council and in accordance with Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution.
Her suspension followed the submission of several petitions to the presidency, alleging misconduct and abuse of office.
In line with constitutional procedure, President Mahama appointed a five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang, to investigate the allegations.
The committee began preliminary hearings during which it reviewed affidavits and evidence submitted by both petitioners and respondents.
While the contents of the petitions remain confidential due to the sensitivity of the proceedings, sources familiar with the matter indicate that they pertain to alleged impropriety in administrative decisions and the handling of certain high-profile judicial cases.
The suspension of a sitting Chief Justice is the first of its kind in Ghana’s Fourth Republic and has sparked widespread reaction from legal experts, civil society organisations, and political observers.
Many have expressed concern over the potential implications for judicial independence, the rule of law, and public confidence in the judiciary.
Justice Torkornoo’s address is anticipated to shed light on the unfolding situation and offer assurances regarding her commitment to due process, transparency, and the integrity of the judiciary.
