The Chairman of the Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has submitted its first report to President John Dramani Mahama on the petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

In March this year, the President received three separate petitions under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, all calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.

The petitions triggered a constitutional process that led to the establishment of the committee in May 2025.

According to the Committee Chair, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, the panel has completed work on the first petition, which was filed by Mr. Daniel Ofori.

The inquiry received testimony from 13 witnesses for the petitioner, while the Chief Justice mounted her defence with 12 witnesses, including experts.

Both parties were represented by four lawyers each, and nearly 10,000 pages of documents were tendered as evidence.

The Chief Justice also appeared before the committee and was cross-examined.

After what the Chair described as a “critical and dispassionate” assessment of the evidence, the committee submitted its recommendation to the President in a sealed report.

The second and third petitions, however, have been put on hold at the request of both the petitioner and the Chief Justice.

The committee indicated that it will present its findings on those matters in due course.
