A/R: Amantena chiefs, youth commit to sustainable mining after RCOMSDEP sensitisation
The chiefs, youth, and residents of Amantena in the Asante Akim North Municipality of the Ashanti Region have pledged their commitment to sustainable and responsible mining following an extensive community engagement led by the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP).
The sensitisation programme, which assembled traditional leaders, municipal authorities, youth groups, and regulatory bodies, aimed at deepening community understanding of responsible mining practices and the need to safeguard the environment while benefiting from local mineral resources.
Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of RCOMSDEP, Ing. Frank Asare, highlighted the immense economic potential mining holds for communities when practised responsibly.
He emphasised that mining can create jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and improve livelihoods.
However, he warned that unregulated or irresponsible mining poses serious risks, including environmental degradation, health challenges, and potential conflicts within the community.
He further encouraged miners to formalise their operations, acquire the necessary permits, and adhere strictly to environmental and safety standards.
He noted that close collaboration with the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) remains critical in ensuring mining activities comply with national regulations.
The Head of Communications for the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP), John Afful, underscored the significant economic potential of mining for local communities when conducted responsibly.
He emphasised that, when managed properly, mining can serve as a powerful driver of job creation, economic growth, and improved livelihoods.
However, he cautioned that unregulated or irresponsible mining activities carry substantial risks, including environmental degradation, health hazards, and the potential for conflicts within communities.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asante Akim North, Sarah Amoakoaa applauded RCOMSDEP for the initiative, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to supporting responsible mining in the area.
He urged community members to work together to ensure the benefits of mining are shared equitably, while the environment is preserved for future generations.
Sub-chiefs present at the engagement expressed gratitude to RCOMSDEP, describing the programme as timely and impactful.
They pledged their full support in promoting sustainable mining and called on the youth to take ownership of the natural resources in a responsible manner.
Representatives from the Konongo Minerals Commission District Office and the EPA took turns to educate participants on regulatory requirements, the importance of formalising mining operations, and the legal consequences of non-compliance.
The interactive session allowed residents and small-scale miners to raise concerns, including challenges facing community miners.
The RCOMSDEP team responded by outlining the support available to miners who are willing to operate within the legal framework.
The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to embrace sustainable and responsible mining. RCOMSDEP assured the community of continued support as they work together to ensure that the wealth of Amantena’s natural resources benefits both the present and future generations.
