GJA commends police for arrest and prosecution of Ahmed Suale murder suspect

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has applauded the Ghana Police Service for arresting and prosecuting a suspect linked to the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on March 19, 2025, and subsequently remanded into police custody.
He is set to reappear in court on April 1, 2025.
The GJA acknowledged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for their role in this breakthrough.
This marks the first major progress in the murder case more than six years after Ahmed Suale was assassinated on January 16, 2019.
The GJA emphasized that this development comes after persistent demands for justice, while urging the police to intensify efforts to apprehend other suspects involved.
The Association also noted that the unresolved case had significantly affected Ghana’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index.
The GJA had earlier set an end-of-March deadline to escalate the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if no significant progress was made.
Going forward, the GJA plans to engage with the police leadership for further details on the prosecution and investigation, while also seeking updates on other unresolved cases of assaults on journalists, including the attack on Latif Iddrisu.
Additionally, the GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the latest development.
These organizations have pledged to pursue justice for Ahmed Suale at international legal forums.
The GJA reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the slain journalist and all media professionals facing threats in Ghana.
