Tension erupts at Awutu Kwashie Abbey as Asafo group storms police station
Tension mounted in the Awutu Kwashie Abbey community and at the Bawjiase District Police Command following a confrontation between police officers and a group of angry Asafo members from Kasoa Ofaakor.
The group reportedly besieged the police station, demanding the immediate release of four soldiers and two National Security officers who had been arrested during an alleged attempt to install a new chief in the area.
According to police sources, the officers were picked up after they were allegedly involved in activities linked to an unauthorised chieftaincy installation at Awutu Kwashie Abbey in the Awutu Senya West District.
However, in a press conference held shortly after the incident, members of the royal family of Awutu Kwashie Abbey strongly denied the allegations that they had recruited the soldiers and National Security operatives to assist in the installation of a new chief.
They instead accused Michael Larbie, whom they claim is not the rightful heir to the stool, of using land guards to terrorise the royal family and illegally engaging in sand winning on farmlands within the community.
“Michael Larbie has been intimidating our family with land guards and unlawfully destroying our lands.
He has no legitimate claim to the throne,” a family spokesperson stated.
The Omankrado of Kwashie Abbey, Nai Ago, speaking to journalist Nana Tawiah, appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Awutu Traditional Council, and the Central Regional House of Chiefs to urgently intervene in order to prevent possible bloodshed and restore calm to the community.
Authorities have since tightened security in the area to prevent further escalation as investigations into the matter continue.
