Okada riders protest over delay in legalising commercial motorcycle operations
Members of the Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) and the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) have taken to the streets to demand the legalisation of commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations in the country.
The protesters say the government has yet to honour its commitment to establish a legal framework for okada operations, despite assurances that the sector would be formally recognised.
The demonstration, held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, is aimed at renewing pressure on the government to act on an issue that has remained a major concern for operators.
Speaking during the protest, one of the riders said many members of the group supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election because of its promise to legalise commercial motorcycle operations.
He said riders expected the government to fulfil that commitment after assuming office.
The continued lack of a legal framework, he added, has left operators exposed to what he described as persistent police harassment and restrictions on where they can operate.
According to the rider, commercial motorcycle operators face enforcement challenges in several parts of Accra, including Kaneshie, Sukura, Jamestown and areas within the Central district.
He expressed disappointment that the government had not yet addressed the issue despite the support riders gave the NDC during the 2024 campaign.
The rider said members of the association invested resources in the party’s campaign, including purchasing campaign materials and mobilising support, based on the expectation that their occupation would be legalised if the NDC won the election.
The protesters are therefore calling on the government to move beyond assurances and introduce the necessary legal framework to regulate commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations.
They argue that legalisation would provide a clear regulatory structure for the sector while allowing operators to work without constant confrontation with law enforcement.
