Ofankor crash kills 12: Obey speed limits, regularly maintain vehicles - Road Safety Authority cautions motorists
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has urged motorists to strictly observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, following a multi-vehicle crash along the John Teye-Ofankor corridor that claimed 12 lives.
The crash occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, and involved seven vehicles: two heavily loaded tipper trucks, two passenger Sprinter buses, two private saloon cars and a tricycle.
Several others were injured and are being treated at Ga North Municipal Hospital and Achimota Hospital.
Speed limits and vehicle checks
The NRSA reminded motorists of Ghana's statutory speed limits: 90km/h on highways, 50km/h in urban settlements, and 30km/h in built-up areas.
It also urged vehicle owners and operators to carry out regular maintenance checks before setting out on journeys, noting that mechanical failures, especially combined with excessive speeding, can significantly contribute to road crashes.
"Regular maintenance checks are essential to prevent avoidable tragedies," the NRSA said.
A call for shared responsibility
The authority said it is concerned about the rising number of fatal crashes nationwide and is intensifying public education and enforcement measures.
It called for greater responsibility and vigilance among road users.
"This painful incident is a reminder of the urgent need for greater responsibility and vigilance on our roads," the NRSA said.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility," it emphasised.
