Land Minister outlines measures to promote sustainable mining
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has outlined a series of interventions aimed at promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible mining across the country.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from Members of Parliament on the floor of the House.
According to the Minister, the Ministry is streamlining the licensing regime by shortening the processing time for small-scale mining permits.
He added that local-level structures are being strengthened through enhanced support for district mining committees and mining associations to improve oversight and community participation.
Mr. Buah further disclosed that areas earmarked for small-scale mining have been clearly marked following geological investigations, while ongoing efforts are being made to transition illegal mining groups into cooperative, community-based mining schemes.
As part of the Ministry’s decentralisation agenda, additional Minerals Commission offices are being established in mining districts to improve service delivery.
He also revealed that enforcement mechanisms have been boosted, including the deployment of water guards to monitor and curb illegal mining activities.
The Minister emphasised that continuous training is being provided to miners to ensure adherence to best practices.
These combined measures, he noted, are geared towards safeguarding the environment while supporting sustainable community development.
