Kumasi MCE sweeps CBD to demand cleanliness from traders
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Kumasi, Mr. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, stunned many traders on Tuesday when he picked up a broom and swept parts of the Central Business District (CBD) after finding the area engulfed in filth.
The MCE, who was on a routine inspection tour to assess sanitation and general maintenance in the city, was taken aback when he arrived at a section opposite the Kumasi Zoological Garden and found traders conducting business in unsanitary conditions.
In a symbolic yet pointed display of leadership, Mr Boadi stepped down from his vehicle, grabbed a broom, and began sweeping the area himself.
His unexpected action immediately drew crowds of traders who rushed to stop him, apologising profusely and promising to maintain cleaner trading spaces moving forward.
Mr. Boadi’s hands-on approach continued as he was later seen directing traffic around the Kumasi Cultural Centre–Zoological Garden roundabout to ease the heavy congestion that often plagues the area.
Speaking to Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah, the MCE said effective leadership goes beyond office work and requires direct supervision and involvement.
He announced plans to personally inspect various parts of Kumasi at least once every week as part of his wider vision to transform the city into a clean, orderly, and modern metropolis.
With the Christmas season approaching, the MCE stressed his determination to maintain high sanitation standards and reduce congestion within the CBD.
He also criticised the negligence of some traders and urged them to take greater responsibility for their surroundings to ensure a safe and healthy trading environment.
Several traders who apologised to the mayor later shared their sentiments, acknowledging their lapses and pledging to support the campaign for a cleaner Kumasi.
