The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has noted receipt of over 40 armoured vehicles given to the service by President John Dramani Mahama "as part of efforts to retool the security services to strengthen internal security, enhance operational capacity and ensure the safety of officers of the service in the fight against violent crime".

GPS explained that the vehicles comprised 25 fully armoured units and 15 light armoured vehicles, include five Cobra-4, 20 Cobra-3 and 15 TLC-79 pickups, "designed specifically for high risk security operations across".

"The armoured vehicles are intended to improve rapid response, enhance officer protection and boost crime fighting operations, particularly in areas where specialised tactical support is required," the service continued in their Facebook post.

At the handing over ceremony, Thursday, December 4, 2025, President Mahama noted that the provision of the vehicles was part of a broader national effort to retool the security services and strengthen their capacity to protect lives, property and national assets as well as protecting the lives of officers. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to adequately resourcing the police service and other security agencies to effectively discharge their constitutional mandate.

The president acknowledged Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and officers of the service for successes chalked in their crime-fighting efforts, urging them to do more to safeguard the peace of the country.

On his part, IGP Yohuno expressed profound appreciation to the president for the armoured vehicles.

He assured that the vehicles would be put to effective operational use and properly maintained to ensure their longevity and sustained impact on crime prevention and control.

The programme, held at the National Police Headquarters, Cantonments, Accra, was crowned with a Show of Force exercise led by the IGP, supported by the members of the Police Management Board, and other officers drawn from the Operations Department, as part of security preparations ahead of the Christmas festivities.
