Galamsey: More arrests expected as Lands Ministry intensifies fight – Director of Communications

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the ongoing fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, as authorities prepare to make additional arrests linked to the illicit activity.
According to the Director of Communications at the Ministry, Madam Mawusi Ama Mawuenyefia, the government’s efforts go beyond the recent developments involving businessman and politician Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
“We have more arrests in the pipeline. It’s not just about Wontumi, the Ministry remains firmly committed to the fight against illegal mining,” she stated.
Speaking to Kwabena Bobie Ansah on the Citizen Show on Monday, 6th September 2025, Miss Mawuenyefia emphasised that the Ministry’s actions are part of a broader, sustained campaign to curb environmental degradation and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
She noted that the illegal mining menace continues to pose a significant threat to water bodies, forest reserves, and the livelihoods of affected communities.
The Ministry, she added, will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure that individuals and groups involved in galamsey face the full rigours of the law.
