The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has called on the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to investigate former Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, over the decision to abolish road tolls in 2021.

This follows the government’s announcement that road and bridge tolls will soon be reintroduced.

Speaking on 12 LIVE on Accra-based Class 91.3 FM, GPRTU Acting Chairman, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, said the union will not accept the reintroduction of tolls without transparency and accountability regarding the earlier cancellation.

“When the Minister was coming with the E-levy, we were promised that they were going to substitute the E-levy with the road toll.

As Drivers, we came out boldly and said no, adding that they should maintain the road toll and E-levy, we are ready to pay.

The sector minister did not give us any respect. He went ahead by cancelling road tolls, causing financial loss to the state,” he said. 

He urged the Attorney General to call on the former sector minister for questioning immediately. 

“If, after investigations, he is a free man, he should go, but if he has caused financial loss to the state, he should be dealt with according to the laws of this country”, he added.
