Mahama unveils nationwide vegetable development project
President John Dramani Mahama has launched a major new initiative aimed at accelerating the country’s agricultural transformation under the government’s Feed Ghana 2025–2028 Agenda.
The Vegetable Development Project, known as “Yɛre Dua,” is expected to significantly expand local food production and strengthen agro-industrial growth.
Launching the programme in Kukum, the President said the project would be implemented nationwide, with particular emphasis on northern Ghana, where water scarcity continues to hinder all-year farming.
He described the initiative as a strategic intervention designed to restore food security, improve productivity, and build a modern, technology-driven agricultural sector.
President Mahama announced that the government is intensifying support for the production of key staples, including rice, maize, soya beans, vegetables, cassava, poultry, and cashew.
He further revealed that new Farmer Service Centres will be established across the country to provide mechanisation services, high-quality inputs, equipment repairs, and extension support to farmers.
In addition, he said, ongoing upgrades and expansion of irrigation infrastructure will ensure continuous production and reduce the sector’s vulnerability to climate-related disruptions.
The President emphasised that these interventions are part of a comprehensive roadmap to enhance domestic food supply, create jobs, and position agriculture as a major driver of national economic growth.
