Mahama rallies African leaders for one voice on debt ahead of 2025 G20 Summit

Former President John Dramani Mahama has joined other African leaders in a resounding call for unity on the continent’s approach to debt restructuring ahead of the 2025 G20 Summit.
Speaking at the inaugural African Union Debt Conference in Togo, President Mahama urged African nations to present a united front in demanding a fairer global debt system.
He stressed that the time had come for Africa to move beyond a narrative of desperation and instead engage the global community as equal partners.
“It is time for Africa to speak with one voice on debt restructuring,” Mahama declared.
“By the end of this conference, we must leave with a renewed vision — one where debt is no longer synonymous with crisis, but with capacity.”
He challenged African leaders not to appear as distressed borrowers seeking relief, but as assertive stakeholders calling for fairness, transparency, and timely reforms in the international financial architecture.
Reaffirming Ghana’s support for the continental cause, Mahama said the country stands ready to work alongside its African peers to champion a bold and collective agenda for reform.
