Former Ashanti Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon, has praised the performance of the current Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, describing him as fit for purpose despite concerns raised about his age.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5 FM, hosted by Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman, Mr. Ackon said discussions about age should not overshadow performance and delivery.

According to him, while it is typical in Ghanaian politics for people to question whether a relatively young appointee is suitable for office, Dr. Amoakohene has demonstrated through his work that competence is not defined by age.

“The interesting thing is that many of us are older than him,” Mr. Ackon noted, “but what matters most is the opportunity to serve and deliver.

When given the opportunity, a leader’s character and capabilities become evident.”

He highlighted the Minister’s ability to understand the needs of society as one of his greatest strengths.

Mr. Ackon described Dr. Amoakohene as a well-educated professional with a medical background who does not boast about his academic achievements but instead focuses on service.

Touching on criticisms about the Minister’s active presence on social media, the former Regional Minister defended the approach, stating that leadership must connect with the people through platforms they use most.

“If the space where the people engage is social media, then that is where he must also be,” he said.

“His age group is active there, and it is important for him to build relationships and communicate government initiatives effectively.”

Mr. Ackon added that beyond social media engagement, Dr. Amoakohene continues to carry out his administrative duties diligently.

He noted that the Minister regularly updates residents on government projects and initiatives in the region and maintains strong respect and collaboration with traditional authorities, including reporting government activities to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to him, with the support of the President, several initiatives are being expanded in Kumasi and across the Ashanti Region, particularly in areas that reflect Kumasi’s commercial significance.

“When you judge him, judge him by delivery,” Mr. Ackon stressed.

“Look at his relationship with the people, his respect for chiefs, his engagement with the youth, and the transformation efforts ongoing in the region.”

He concluded that Dr. Amoakohene has performed well so far, adding that while development efforts are ongoing nationwide, Kumasi’s commercial nature requires careful consideration of the economic impact of every policy and initiative.
