The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has offered to work with the government to finish and open some Agenda 111 hospital projects across Ghana.

The offer came up when leaders of the Ghana Adventist Health Services, led by Dr James Antwi, met with the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The church presented a proposal covering four areas: trauma care, holistic wellness, oncology and cancer treatment, and rehabilitation and health services.

Mr Akandoh said government cannot meet the growing needs of the health sector on its own, and called on faith-based organisations and private healthcare providers to help complete the Agenda 111 projects.

"Government alone cannot meet the growing demands of the health sector," the minister said.

He urged the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and private healthcare providers to identify Agenda 111 facilities they could support, explaining that these partnerships would mean directly supporting the completion of specific facilities — not giving money to government.

Other health sector updates

Mr Akandoh also announced plans to build six regional hospitals in the newly created regions. Three are expected to be completed this year, with the remaining three finished in 2027.

On specialised healthcare, he said two cardiology centres are being built in Tamale and at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and that a cardiac catheterisation laboratory has already been installed and commissioned at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The minister also pointed to the government's Free Primary Healthcare initiative, the removal of the cap on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund as key steps toward reaching Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

He again stressed that doctors must accept postings to designated areas to improve healthcare access across the country.
