The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Care, is beginning to make a tangible impact on healthcare delivery across the country, with its Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, highlighting significant progress since the initiative was launched.

According to the Administrator, the fund has moved beyond policy and legislation to delivering real benefits to Ghanaians, marking a transition "from promises to action, and from law to lives saved."

Since becoming operational, 50 patients have already received lifesaving financial support through the fund, easing the burden of accessing critical medical care for individuals battling serious health conditions.

As part of efforts to strengthen specialized healthcare services, the new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is now fully operational and performing advanced heart procedures, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatment abroad.

The expansion of cardiac care is also underway, with plans to establish additional cardiac centres in Kumasi, Tamale, Sekondi and Ho, a move expected to improve access to specialized heart treatment across the country.

Beyond infrastructure, Mahama Care is investing heavily in human resource development. Hundreds of specialist nurses, doctors and pharmacists are currently undergoing advanced training to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare and ensure specialized medical services are available to more communities nationwide.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established to provide financial support for the treatment of chronic and life-threatening diseases while strengthening the country's healthcare system. Officials say the initiative forms part of the government's broader commitment to achieving equitable access to quality healthcare and improving health outcomes for all Ghanaians.

Administrator Obuobia Darko-Opoku says the progress recorded so far demonstrates the fund's commitment to delivering lifesaving interventions and building a stronger, more accessible healthcare system for every Ghanaian.
