The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has called for bold and coordinated action to address the growing impact of climate change on water resources and livelihoods.

Speaking at the 5th IRAD International Conference on Water Resources, Climate Change Resilience and Sustainable Systems, Dr. Jinapor highlighted the increasing threats posed by climate change, including prolonged droughts, flooding and water scarcity.

He stressed the need for integrated strategies to safeguard water resources while promoting sustainable development.

According to the Minister, the government is advancing Ghana’s energy transition through the Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund, expanded solar infrastructure, and the development of renewable mini-grids across the country.

He also disclosed that the government has approved 200 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity with battery storage under Legislative Instrument 2508 to support clean energy generation and improve energy reliability.

Dr. Jinapor further noted that efforts are being made to strengthen the energy–water–food nexus to enhance climate resilience and food security.

As part of these measures, he said the government is rolling out nationwide solar-powered irrigation systems and aims to deploy about 3,500 solar water pumps by 2029 to support agricultural productivity.

The Minister expressed optimism that through collaboration and sustained commitment, Ghana can build a water-secure, climate-resilient and prosperous future.
