The School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon, has appealed to philanthropists, corporate organisations and other well-meaning individuals to support the acquisition of a bus to facilitate its theatre productions and other performing arts activities.

Dean of the School, Professor Sylvanus Kwashie Kuwor, said reliable transportation was essential to the school’s operations because students and faculty frequently travel outside the university campus for performances and other activities.

He made the appeal when an alumnus of the school, Ewura Adams Karim, donated chairs to the Theatre Arts Department as part of efforts to give back to her alma mater.

Prof Kuwor said the donation demonstrated the important role alumni could play in supporting the development of the institution.

"We will be extremely grateful. Just as our alumni are thinking about us, we believe we will have more philanthropists to come to our aid," he said.

According to the Dean, the school regularly undertakes theatre productions and other practical activities outside the university, making access to dedicated transportation particularly important.

"We are now left with no bus after our bus got burnt into ashes making it very difficult   and impossible to carry out our outreach programs"

He said a school bus would help ease the transportation difficulties faced by students and faculty while also supporting the practical training that forms an important part of performing arts education.

Prof Kuwor therefore appealed to individuals, corporate organisations and other potential donors to assist the school in acquiring a bus.

He said such support would contribute significantly to the school's ability to organise performances and provide students with practical experiences beyond the classroom.

Prof Kuwor expressed appreciation to Ewura Adams Karim for the donation of chairs, describing it as an example of how alumni can contribute to improving the learning environment at their alma mater. 

"We will be extremely grateful just as our alumni Ewura Adams Karim have donated chairs to us. We believe strongly that with this spirit we will have more philanthropist and Donors will come to our aid."

He encouraged other alumni, philanthropists and corporate organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting the School of Performing Arts with equipment and other resources.

He said continued support would help strengthen teaching, learning and practical training while improving the school’s capacity to nurture the next generation of Ghanaian performers and theatre practitioners.
