Vice President marks International Women’s Day with call for gender equity
The Vice President of Ghana, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, joined staff and officials at the Presidency to commemorate International Women’s Day, using the occasion to highlight the importance of advancing gender equity in the workplace and across society.
The event was held under the theme, “From Commitment to Action: Promoting Equity for Every Woman in the Workplace,” and provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while reflecting on the progress still needed to close gender gaps.
Addressing participants, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang extended warm wishes to women across the country and noted that women have historically played central roles in Ghanaian communities and economies.
She said women have long contributed knowledge, leadership and innovation in various spheres of society, citing the roles of healers, traders and queen mothers who traditionally played key roles in governance and community leadership.
The Vice President emphasised the need to critically examine existing systems and structures when disparities persist, stressing that advancing gender equity requires deliberate action and mentorship for the next generation of women leaders.
She also drew attention to women working in informal sectors, noting that many women operate from markets, streets and small trading spaces across the country, yet remain the backbone of local economies.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended women working within the Presidency for their dedication and leadership, and reaffirmed the importance of promoting equity, respect and opportunity for every woman as a pathway to strengthening governance and driving sustainable national development.
She further called on both men and women to work together to break barriers and ensure that every woman has the opportunity to thrive and contribute fully to the country’s development.
