TOR explains: Ghana unlikely to face fuel shortage despite Iran–Israel conflict
The Corporate Affairs Officer of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Godwin Mahama Ayaba, has assured that Ghana is unlikely to experience fuel shortages despite escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Ayaba supported assurances issued earlier by the National Petroleum Authority(NPA) that the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran will not disrupt fuel supply in the country.
According to him, the NPA recently released an official statement confirming that the situation in the Middle East will not lead to shortages of petroleum products in Ghana.
Ayaba explained that Ghana’s diversified fuel import structure significantly reduces the risk of supply disruptions. He noted that the country imports the majority of its finished petroleum products from Europe.
“Ghana largely imports from two different areas: Europe and the Arabian region. Where we import most is Europe,” he said on Joy Prime's The Pulse on March 11, 2026.
He indicated that about 80 per cent of Ghana’s finished petroleum products come from Europe, while around 20 per cent are sourced from the Arabian region, which could be affected by the ongoing tensions.
However, Ayaba said potential supply gaps from the Middle East could be offset by increasing domestic refining capacity.
He disclosed that TOR is currently producing about 28,000 barrels per day, with output expected to rise to 45,000 barrels after ongoing upgrades and eventually increase to 60,000 barrels.
Ayaba added that other refineries in the country are also contributing to local production.
According to him, Sentuo Refinery is producing between 36,000 and 40,000 barrels per day, Akwaaba Refinery produces less than 10,000 barrels, while Platon Refinery produces just under 3,000 barrels daily.
Combined output from these facilities, he said, would be sufficient to offset any potential supply disruptions from the Middle East.
Ayaba, therefore, urged the public not to panic, reiterating the assurance issued by the NPA that Ghana will not experience fuel shortages.
