Over one million Ghanaians employed in 2025 – Mahama announces at SONA
President John Dramani Mahama has announced significant gains in job creation and poverty reduction, revealing that more than one million Ghanaians secured employment between the first and third quarters of 2025.
Delivering his address to the Parliament of Ghana on February 27, the President cited data from the Ghana Statistical Service, which indicates that approximately 950,000 citizens moved out of multidimensional poverty within the same period.
President Mahama described the development as clear evidence that the government’s economic recovery measures are beginning to yield tangible results for households across the country.
He also highlighted improvements in Ghana’s external sector performance, noting that the country’s current account recorded a surplus of $9.1 billion by December 2025.
This represents 8.1 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to 1.8 percent in 2024.
According to the President, the turnaround was driven by strong export earnings from gold, cocoa and non-traditional exports, as well as increased remittance inflows.
“This improvement indicates that our economy is gaining strength and resilience on the global stage,” he stated, adding that the government is moving decisively from planning to implementation of its flagship 24-hour economy policy.
President Mahama said the combined gains in employment, poverty reduction and external sector stability signal a strengthening economy poised for sustained growth.
